The journey · 2021

The project meant for a doctorate.

In 2021, for his university project, Atakan Özalan built an AR marketplace on Google Glass 2.

It is a project normally given at doctoral level, and he asked his professor for it because he believed he could do it.

Most students take the project they are given. He went to his professor and asked for one that is normally given at doctoral level: augmented reality on Google Glass 2, the enterprise edition of Google's smart glasses. He asked because he believed he could do it.

What he built was a marketplace on the glasses. Someone with a phone could hire a person wearing Glass in another city for hands-on errands, such as shopping, finding the way or handling a parcel, and watch through the wearer's eyes while it happened.

When his professor saw it working, the verdict was short: this is a real business.

The photo below is from March 2021, while the project was under way, and in April 2021 he forked Google's Glass Enterprise Edition 2 samples to his GitHub.

The device did not get the same future. Google ended Glass Enterprise Edition itself: sales stopped on 15 March 2023, and support on 15 September 2023.

He has written that he chose Glass knowing it had no consumer future, and that the project taught him to reason from the machine itself rather than from answers on Stack Overflow.

Questions

Asked about this chapter.

What was Atakan Özalan's Google Glass project?

His university project, in 2021: an AR marketplace on Google Glass 2, in which someone with a phone could hire a Glass wearer in another city for hands-on errands and see through their eyes. It is a project normally given at doctoral level; he asked his professor for it.

Was the Google Glass marketplace launched commercially?

No. It was a university project and a working demo. His professor called it a real business, but Google ended Glass Enterprise Edition itself: sales on 15 March 2023 and support on 15 September 2023.

What did the Glass project teach Atakan Özalan?

That the right idea can sit on a device the market drops, so you build for where people already are; and to reason from the machine itself rather than from forum answers.
